Listen music on GNU/Linux

One of most quality audio formats which exist for a long time is Audio CD (CDDA), most popular as “normal" CD. It is none compressed high quality audio record which is placed on CD Media, mostly in length of 80 min. One of bad sides of this format is his capacity, but there is also a good side and that would be a high sound quality, what is of course most important to you.

On Linux platform there are few programs which will help you to enjoy in this kind of music. With KDE environment comes KsCD which contain main functions for Audio CD reproduction, manager for editing and downloading CDDB dates from internet, and also supports CDText information's. These kinds of programs are ideal solution if you want to listen music from CD's.

GnomeCD is programs for this purpose but only for Gnome environment. Unfortunately he couldn’t read CDText, but he did downloaded data from CDDB. Both programs (KsCD and GnomeCD) have digital sound over IDE cable which connect optical device with mother board, so you don't need to have cable which connect CD-Device and sound card on motherboard. Both programs which we did mention above are for KDE/Gnome environment and they can only reproduce Audio CD.

Now you have necessary program to listen Audio CD on GNU/Linux, but what if your favorite songs are on today most popular MP3 format or maybe on other familiar formats like OGG, RA, etc... Then you can't use GnomeCD, you need to have optional tool.

XMMS (X Multimedia System) is build similar to WinAMP and XMMS support classic WinAmp skins. This program also can reproduce AudioCD, Wav, MP3, AAC and FLAC formats, and after installing of extensions you can even reproduce OFF, MP4, WMA, JACK etc... There are few other extensions which enables you for example to use remote controller. Sound reproducing is working over OSS, ALSA, aRts or eSound output. Development of this program is very slow but XMMS is very quality and popular player in Linux community. Newest version of this programs is 1.1.10

Another solution which I will introduce to you is Rhythmbox which is based on multimedia machine Gstreame and he can be integrated quit well with GNOME environment. This program is also offering a possibility to reproduce music of Internet streams.

Well for now this would be it. I hope I bring you much closer software's which you can use to listen any type of music on your Linux platform. If maybe want to suggest or maybe even to describe any other music software for Linux just contact me and I will be pleased to publish you text.
